2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.
Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.
Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
