A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
