In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
