Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
