Novak Djokovic Issues Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Cloud"
Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the scheduling of the sanction last year.
Details of the Suspension
The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in February 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.
"This shadow will trail him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in a discussion on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.
"It's just something that, it was so significant, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I believe it won't fully vanish. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."
The Champion's Viewpoint
The Serbian player stated that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he proceeded to question how the Italian managed to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.
"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it's just it was very, very odd," Djokovic added.
Wider Player Reactions
"I really don't like how the case was being handled and you could hear so many other players, across both tours, who had some similar situations voicing their concerns publicly and complaining that it was a preferable treatment."
