Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants domestically and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional new year's auction.
Dubbed the King of Tuna, this businessman is renowned for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This latest acquisition surpasses his own notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its restaurants across Japan.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was quickly prepared for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so lucky as the year gets underway," said one satisfied diner.
