The Princess of Wales's Yearly Festive Carol Concert Honours Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.
The 1,600 guests will hear a mix of carols, music and readings from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Compassion and Love
The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to budding artists backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the charity, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.
Within the audience will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
