Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Following Emphatic Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel shared his disappointment that the England team did not get more support from the home crowd during their impressive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was satisfied to see his side maintain their winning momentum, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the match. Yet, he was displeased with the mood at the iconic venue.
“We had limited training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we excelled,” Tuchel stated. “It could have been 5-0 up at the break. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you provide in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the squad earned better encouragement today.”
“I stand by my words. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a little more backing in moments where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to regain energy, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Apart from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also created controversy by leaving out Bellingham and Foden from his squad. Yet the decision was validated by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that his team, who host Belgium in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, take lessons from their poor performance in the opening period.
“This is why I wanted this match,” the manager stated. “I wanted to assess where we are. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after colliding with a post and may miss out when the national team face Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
