Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
